Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care at Spine Chiropractic Melrose Park

Knee pain can make even the simplest activities feel challenging. Walking up stairs, getting out of a chair, going for a run, playing sport or even taking your dog for a walk can become painful and frustrating.

One of the first questions I ask patients is:

"When does your knee hurt the most?"

Is it when you first stand up after sitting? Does it hurt while walking downhill? Does it click, lock or give way? Or has it gradually become more painful over time?

These answers tell me much more than simply knowing where your pain is.

At Spine Chiropractic Melrose Park, I believe successful treatment starts with understanding why your knee has become painful. Every patient receives a comprehensive assessment because knee pain is often influenced by much more than the knee itself.

Sometimes the source of the problem may actually involve your foot mechanics, ankle mobility, hip strength, lower back or the way your body moves.

My goal is to identify these contributing factors and develop a personalised treatment plan that helps you move confidently and return to the activities you enjoy.

What Is Knee Pain?

The knee is one of the largest and hardest-working joints in the body.

Every step you take places significant forces through the knee, making it particularly vulnerable to injury and wear over time.

The knee relies on many different structures working together, including:

  • Bones

  • Cartilage

  • Menisci

  • Ligaments

  • Tendons

  • Muscles

  • Bursa

  • Nerves

Pain may arise from any of these structures, which is why two people with "knee pain" often require completely different treatment approaches.

Common Symptoms

Depending on the underlying cause, knee pain may include:

  • Pain walking

  • Pain climbing stairs

  • Pain squatting

  • Pain kneeling

  • Stiffness

  • Swelling

  • Clicking

  • Locking

  • Giving way

  • Pain after exercise

  • Morning stiffness

  • Difficulty straightening the knee

  • Pain around the kneecap

  • Pain on the inside or outside of the knee

Common Causes of Knee Pain

There are many possible reasons why your knee may become painful.

Common causes include:

  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Meniscal injuries

  • Ligament sprains

  • Tendon injuries

  • Runner's knee

  • Jumper's knee

  • IT Band Syndrome

  • Bursitis

  • Sports injuries

  • Previous trauma

  • Muscle weakness

  • Poor lower limb biomechanics

  • Flat feet or altered foot mechanics

Many patients have more than one contributing factor.

Risk Factors

Several factors may increase the likelihood of developing knee pain, including:

  • Running

  • Jumping sports

  • Previous knee injuries

  • Poor footwear

  • Weak hip muscles

  • Flat feet

  • Reduced ankle mobility

  • Obesity

  • Physically demanding occupations

  • Increasing age

  • Osteoarthritis

How We Assess Knee Pain

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming the painful knee is always the problem.

At Spine Chiropractic Melrose Park, your assessment includes looking at how your whole body moves.

Your examination may include:

  • Medical history

  • Postural assessment

  • Walking and gait analysis

  • Foot mechanics assessment

  • Hip strength testing

  • Knee range of motion

  • Ligament testing

  • Meniscal testing

  • Muscle strength assessment

  • Functional movement testing

  • Neurological examination where indicated

If imaging or referral is appropriate, we'll discuss this with you.

Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care for Knee Pain

Treatment is always individualised.

Depending on your assessment findings, your treatment may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments where clinically appropriate

  • Activator Methods®

  • Soft tissue therapy

  • Rehabilitation exercises

  • Strengthening programmes

  • Balance training

  • Mobility exercises

  • Patellar taping where appropriate

  • Foot biomechanics assessment

  • Orthotic assessment if indicated

  • Return-to-sport rehabilitation

Our focus is not only reducing pain but improving the way your body moves so the knee is placed under less unnecessary stress.

Why We Look Beyond the Knee

This is something I explain to patients almost every day.

The knee sits between the hip and the ankle.

If either of those joints isn't moving well, the knee often has to compensate.

For example:

  • Weak hip muscles may cause the knee to collapse inward.

  • Limited ankle mobility may change how you squat.

  • Flat feet may alter the way forces travel through your leg.

  • Lower back or pelvic dysfunction may influence movement patterns.

Rather than chasing symptoms, I like to understand why your knee is under extra stress in the first place.

From Dr Nasim

One of the most rewarding moments for me is when a patient realises their knee isn't "worn out"—it's simply not moving as efficiently as it could.

Many people arrive worried that pain automatically means surgery or permanent damage.

In reality, pain is often influenced by many factors, including strength, movement, previous injuries, confidence and how your body adapts to load.

My goal is to help you understand those factors, explain what's happening in simple language and guide you through a rehabilitation programme that's realistic for your lifestyle.

Helping someone get back to running, playing sport or simply walking without pain is one of the most satisfying parts of my job.

Home Advice

Depending on your diagnosis, recommendations may include:

  • Walking

  • Strengthening exercises

  • Hip stability exercises

  • Improving ankle mobility

  • Weight management where appropriate

  • Activity modification

  • Appropriate footwear

  • Ice or heat where indicated

  • Following your rehabilitation programme

Every programme is individualised.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention?

Seek urgent medical assessment if you experience:

  • Significant swelling immediately after injury

  • Inability to bear weight

  • Knee deformity

  • Fever with a swollen knee

  • Locking that prevents movement

  • Progressive weakness

  • Severe trauma

  • Unexplained weight loss

Myth vs Fact

❌ Myth

"Knee pain means I have arthritis."

✅ Fact

Although arthritis is one possible cause, many people experience knee pain because of muscle weakness, tendon irritation, sports injuries, movement patterns or previous trauma.

Did You Know?

Research shows that strengthening the muscles around the hip and knee often plays an important role in improving many common knee conditions. Rehabilitation is frequently just as important as hands-on treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can chiropractic care help knee pain?

Many people with mechanical knee pain may benefit from chiropractic care combined with rehabilitation and exercise following a comprehensive assessment.

Do I need an MRI?

Not everyone requires imaging. Whether an MRI is appropriate depends on your symptoms, examination findings and whether the results are likely to influence management.

Can knee pain come from my back?

Yes. Some lower back conditions can refer pain into the knee or affect muscle function around the leg. This is one reason why we assess more than just the knee.

Can orthotics help knee pain?

For some patients with altered foot biomechanics, custom orthotics may help improve lower limb alignment and reduce stress on the knee. They are recommended only when clinically appropriate.

Should I stop exercising?

Not usually. In many cases, modifying your activity while continuing appropriate exercise is beneficial. We'll help guide you on what is safe based on your condition.
